We are pleased to announce the
Music @ First 2009/2010 Concert Series
and invite you to become a sponsor or subscriber.
Sponsors receive recognition in the program for each concert along with a subscription to the entire concert series. Sponsorship opportunities start at $50 per sponsor. Corporate subscriptions are welcome.

Mary Jo Simonds-Huneger, Soprano - Songs of the Masters… has performed in the United States, Italy and Switzerland. Her repertoire includes songs and arias by Brahms, Debussy, Puccini, Mozart as well as Gershwin and Rogers & Hammerstein |

Rosewood Chamber Ensemble…featuring Barbara Hopkins, flute, and Judy Handler, guitar, performing songs, lively dances and traditional hymn tunes from early America. Hear repertoire ranging from Stephen Foster songs to quadrille sets, and sing along to traditional American hymn tunes. Barbara performs on authentic, simple system flutes, made by Asa Hopkins in Litchfield, CT, c. 1830. |

Organ Recital by Charles Miller… Organist and Minister of Music at National City Christian Church in Washington D.C. and formerly Organist at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, he will perform major works by John Cook, Johann Sebastian Bach, Charle-Marie Widor and Louis Vierne as well as arrangements of familiar hymns by Dale Wood, Virgil Fox, Frederick Swann and others. |

Christmas Concert… our Holiday celebration features FCCV’s Sanctuary, Joyful Praise and Bell Choirs along with soloists and ensembles performing the best of sacred and secular Christmas music. |

Choral Celebration of Black History Month…the Alfred E. White Chorale, Vernon Chorale and Hartford Chorale Chamber Singers pay tribute to Black History Month in a reprise of the concert that “sold out” the house in 2009. |
February 21 at 4pm |
Guitar/Mandolin/Violin Trio… Judy Handler and Mark Levesque return for their 4th encore presentation and will be joined by Martha Kayser, violinist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. The trio blends Brazilian, Latin American, gypsy, classical and folk music influences. |
March 28th at 3pm |
Fumito Nunoya, Marimbist… has performed for audiences in the U.S., Europe, Japan and was invited to be a soloist in concert with The Houston Symphony, Boston Symphony Conservatory Orchestra and Eastern Connecticut Symphony. He has won many awards including first prize at the Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition.FumitoNunoya.com |

Proceeds from
Music@First will be used to fund the Les Childs Scholarship
awarded annually to an applicant for pursuit of excellence
in music. Les Childs was choir director for First Congregational
Church of Vernon for over 13 years until his death in 1999.
He was well liked and respected for his musicianship and professionalism.
He was a founding member of CONCORA, the premier Connecticut
choral musicians. He was also Director of Music at South Catholic
High School in Hartford, where he was a teacher, mentor and
role model to many youth. He was involved in numerous musical
organizations in the area. The Les Childs Music Scholarship
fund was established to continue his work in teaching and
influencing students of music.

Music@First Special Notice
On Sunday February 21, 2010, Music @ First will again present a Choral Celebration of Black History Month. This thrilling concert will feature three of Connecticut’s premier choral ensembles:
- Alfred E. White Chorale
- Vernon Chorale
- Hartford Chorale Chamber Singers
These three choirs will present an unprecedented collaboration bringing African American and spiritual music to FCCV and our community.
Suggested donation for this concert will be $10; $8 for seniors, students and groups of 20 or more. However, there will be no additional donation requested from Music @ First sponsors.
The 2009 concert was completely sold out. Therefore, we suggest you come early to ensure seating for the 2010 concert.

The Sanctuary Choir at First Congregational Church of Vernon invites all who enjoy choral singing to join us in creating a joy-filled message of song.
- No auditions required
- No long term commitment required
- Church membership not required

- Love of choral singing in fellowship with others is ESSENTIAL.
