Billions of people understand that Jesus excelled in helping people in need. He raised Lazarus and the only son of a widow up from the dead. Along the border between Samaria and Galilee, Jesus entered a village and healed ten men of leprosy. As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting by the roadside and called out to Jesus and said, “Lord, I want to see.” Jesus replied, “Receive your sight, your faith has healed you.” True, they are miracles in nature and for doubters up for debate. The Gospels, however, make it clear that because of Jesus’ love, kindness takes hold in the most unexpected ways. We, like Jesus, have the power and ability to engage in acts of loving-kindness.

As people of faith and believers of Christ’s love for us, we, too, have healing powers. We extend a hand to lift up the spirit of people dwelling in darkness. Our smile warms the heart of a person frozen in fear. We dip into our wallets and purses to buy food to fill empty stomachs, clothe shivering bodies and provide shelter for those huddled against the barbs of hurtful words and glaring faces. Our kindness also heals.
February houses Valentine’s Day, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of our Lenten Season. It’s the perfect time to raise our level of support for our neighbors and friends. Jesus showed us. We have lived it. Now we are positioned to enhance our efforts for breathing life into Jesus’ message and believing our miracles can and will make a difference in the community we call home.
